Without a doubt, any variety of apple can be dehydrated. There are a large variety of apples to choose from, and no choice is wrong. In addition to orchard apples, wild apples which have been foraged or gleaned also make excellent choices.

Dehydrated Cinnamon Apple Rings – Ingredients
- Apples, any variety
- Lemon Juice, bottled
- Cold Water
- Cinnamon, ground
- Organic Cane Sugar, optional
- Cloves, ground, optional
- Distilled White Vinegar, washing solution
Dehydrated Cinnamon Apple Rings – Equipment
- Dehydrator, preferably one with a rear mounting fan
- Mandolin
- Bowl for soaking apples
- Mason Jars
- Vacuum Sealer
- Jar Sealer
- Oxygen Absorbers
Dehydrated Cinnamon Apple Rings – Instructions
Washing Apples
First and foremost, washing apples is an important step. The vinegar solution not only cleans the apples but kills any bugs. Also, the solution helps to remove any waxy film coating found on the apples.
- Begin be washing the apples in a vinegar water solution. The solution will consist of 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar. Allow apples to soak in the solution for up to 10 minutes.
Preparing Apples
Next, prepare the apples for the dehydrator. Following the tips below will ensure for a delicious product.
The thickness of the slices is important. Slices which are to thick and unevenly cut will not drying evenly.
Without a doubt, soaking apples in a lemon solution should not be skipped. Not only does this step prevents browning, it enhances the flavor of the fruit, too. The lemon water solution is made of 1 cup lemon juice to 1 cup cold water.
Also, it is important to allow not allow the apples to slices to touch on the dehydrator trays. The air must be able to circulate completely around the apple slices. This allows for proper drying.
- Using a mandolin, slice apples to roughly 1/8-inch thick.
- Next, place sliced apples in a lemon water solution to prevent the apples from browning. Allow the apple slices to soak up to 10 minutes.
- Using a separate bowl mix ground spices and sugar, gently toss apples in the mixture.
- In a single layer, space apples onto the dehydrator trays allow air flow to circulate around the apples.
- Finally, set the temperature and timer based on the instruction from the manual of your dehydrator.
Storing Dried Apples
Storing dehydrated apples properly is important. Especially ones which will be kept long-term. Ensuring that there is no oxygen within the container minimizes the chance for mold to grow.
Begin by determining how long it will take to consume what has been dried.
- Short-term storage (up to 3 months) – Store dehydrated apples, along with an oxygen absorber, in Mason jars or vacuum sealed bag.
- Long-term storing (up to 12 months) – Store dried apples, along with an oxygen absorber, in Mason jars or vacuum sealed bag. Vacuum seal Mason jars using a jar sealer attachment found on the vacuum sealer machine.
Last, but not least, store dehydrated cinnamon apple rings in a cool dark location until ready to consume. For maximum freshness, consume dried apple rings within 1 year.
Note
- Apples which are sliced thinly and evenly dry best between 135 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Also, fan placement plays an important factor on how quickly and evenly food dries.
- As always, it is best to review the dehydrator manual for suggested temperature and time.
- Once the apple slices have completely dried they become pliable and leathery in texture.

Ingredients
- 12 pounds Apples, any variety
- 2 cups Lemon Juice, bottled
- 2 cups Cold Water
- 1/4 cup Cinnamon, ground
- 1 cup Organic Cane Sugar, optional
- Cloves, ground, optional
- All Spice, ground, optional
Vegetable and Fruit Vinegar Washing Solution
- 1 cup Distilled White Vinegar
- 3 cups Water
Instructions
- Wash apples well in a vinegar water solution, 3 parts water to 1 part distilled white vinegar.
- Using a mandolin, slice apples to roughly 1/8-inch thick.
- Place sliced apples in a lemon water solution to prevent the apples from browning, 1 cup lemon juice to 1 cup cold water. Allow apples to soak up to 10 minutes.
- In a separate bowl mix ground spices and sugar, gently toss apples into the mixture.
- Place apples on the dehydrator trays in a single layer not touching.
- Set the temperature and timer based on the instruction found in the manual of your dehydrator.
Storing Preserved Apples
- Short-term storage (up to 3 months) - simply store dehydrated apples in a mason jar or vacuum sealed bag with an oxygen absorber.
- Long-term storing (up to 12 months) - place dried apples and an oxygen absorber into Mason jars or vacuum sealed bags. Mason jars will need to be sealed using a jar sealer attachment which is often included with many vacuum sealers.
- Store containers in a cool dark location until ready to consume. For maximum freshness, dehydrated cinnamon apple rings can be stored up to 12 months.

Thinly sliced apples will take roughly 5 to 7 hours to dry, with the temperature set around 135 to 140 degrees. However, consult the dehydrator's manual for the best drying time and temperature. Dried apples will have a pliable, leathery texture when done dehydrating.
