Smoked kale kraut, my newest home fermenting recipe is now up on our website. You know it's good when taste testing day turned into, the jar's almost gone day. This is the best spring time ferment around. 👏🙌 Well, other than my basic kale and garlic kraut. But for that recipe you'll have to wait, and yes, that recipe has a slight surprise in it as well! #borntofarm...Absolutely. Though that's not how my life began. Prior to 6 years ago I had no idea what it was like to live this life. Everything I know has been self taught, let's just say I jumped in head first and managed to swim. The love and passion I felt for growing and raising our food, and living a TRULY simple life engulfed me. So, yes, I was born to farm. My path in life was decided for me long before I knew it myself, and I am a much better person because of this life. #simplicity .

Emptying the freezer means bone broth making time. This time around it's pork bones, however, it's also been about beef, chicken, and poultry feet broth. Dried herbs from the garden, ugly carrots from cold storage, onions, garlic, and apple cider vinegar. All cooked slow and low for the next 48 hours, then pressure canned for us and the dogs. No, I do not use a Insta pot to make bone broth and neither should you. Nothing good comes out of instant foods. And in truth, why would you want a one shot deal with your bones? Slow roasting them allows the bones to be reused a few time before they are depleted of all their goodness. Giving me almost 3x more product than a pressure cooker. Don't hate me for disliking the Insta pot! It's just one of those appliances I find no need for.

I am one of those CRAZY people who loves the laund

I am one of those CRAZY people who loves the laundromat! Seriously, where else can you go to get a week's load of laundry and blankets washed and dried in just a few short hours? Vacation clothes for 3, a week of Justin's work clothes, and our queen size heavy blankets done in a little over 2 hours. If they had WIFI I'd make this a weekly occurence! #truth

When you crave a good kraut, and the garden is still asleep you do what you gotta do; off to the market I went. My smoked kale kraut will be ready in a few days and I can't wait to dig my fork into it. Next to the fire it will sit to ferment and then into my belly it will go! I may even share a bite or two with the family. Yes, of course I will! The recipe will be up next week, and you'll want to save it for the first harvest of the season. It's absolutely gut healthy good!

Can you feed yourself if you have to relocate on foot during a natural disaster? Foraging for edible vegetation until you reach a safe location? I ask myself this question all the time. During our visit to Waimea Falls I found myself looking for edibles, and without trying to hard I was able to find quite a few. Bananas, taro, mountain guava, and tangerines popped out quickly. Fish was plentiful in the flowing creeks and ponds, and banana and ti leaves could be used to cook fish and meat. This is glimps of how my mind works! 😂😂😂😂

Regrets are lessons in life. Sooooo true. I regret moving to a property which I could not house pigs. This is my BIGGEST regret. I regret not seeing the sun rise and set each day. Another truth. I regret not having enough time in the day to get all the things done. Yep there's another one for you.

The nice things about having regrets is that there is ALWAYS a fix to them. In a few short years we will be looking for our forever homestead. And sadly it will not be Hawai'i.
.
So give it to me, the best place for us to settle is.....must have - good space for pigs, the ability to see the sun rise and set, and I'll pass on needing more time in the day. .

Divorce, especially one with kids, is hard. My first husband and I divorced after being married for 15 years, and in that time we had 2 beautiful children. The divorce was messy, full of anger, and lots of sorrow. But the one thing we did right was parent our children together. Our kids never knew what was happening being the scene of our disagreements, we made sure of that.

This trip to Hawai'i was a mother/daughter trip, but it was also a time to celebrate the life of my ex-husband who passed unexpectedly two years ago.
.
We left an orchid lei to surf with him at his favorite surf spot, and I was able to tell Maile about the many hours her father and I spent at Sandy's Beach.
.
Parenting is hard. Parenting with an ex is even harder. Regardless, if you have children to raise then you must raise them together. Your children deserve this.
.
To my ex-husband, surf on, John. The kids are doing good, and they miss you lots. .
