Selecting the Best Apple Variety
As with anything, there are various opinions in regards to which variety of apples are the best to use for making apple butter. However, there is no wrong choice when selecting apples.
A softer variety will cook down much faster than ones which are crispier in texture. Keep in mind, softer apples provide a naturally sweeter taste whereas a crisp apple often has a tartness to them.
With that said, do not base your decision on the texture of an apple. Base your decision on your favorite variety, or combine different varieties to create a unique flavor your family will enjoy.
Here is a list of apples which are softer in texture yet full in flavor. :
- Braeburn
- Cortland
- Fuji
- Gravenstein
- Grimes Golden
- Jonamac
- Ida Red
- Liberty
- McIntosh
Honeycrisp apples are absolutely fabulous for making apple butter, however, they can be quite pricey. Purchasing seconds will not only save you money it will also provide you with a sweeter apple.

Wash Apples
First and foremost, make sure to wash the apples well. The vinegar solution not only cleans the apples but will also kill bugs. Also, the solution helps to remove any waxy film coating found on the fruit.
- Begin by washing the apples in a vinegar water solution. The solution will consist of 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar. Allow apples to soak in the solution for up to 10 minutes to remove any wax.

How do you slow cook the apples? With water, in a crock put our in a Dutch oven? Can you please explain further the details on how to cook. .. you provided the ingredients but no instructions? Thank you in advance!
I am so sorry about that! I have been trying to recover blogs, and I think I must have missed that step. You can use a crock pot or a roasting over to make apple butter. Simply take all the ingredients and place them into the crockpot, stirring all the ingredients after a few hours, and allowing it to cook for roughly 8 to 10 hours. I let mine cook overnight and process in the am. I hope that cleared it up for you, and I made modifications on the actual blog!
A friend gave me a huge bag of tiny crab apples. Do you think they would be ok for making apple butter?
Crabapples can be canned, however, you would have to add a lot of sweetener to sweeten them up. Unless you’d like a tart butter.
